How can we help millennials navigate major life events?

The Guidepost is a new online platform, adjacent to Justworks, that is designed to provide free educational resources for people as they prepare for and progress through major life events, such as paying off student debt or starting a family.

CHALLENGE

Meet a need for easy-to-digest, short courses on the complicated, but common, life events facing most members of the modern workforce.

TIMELINE

1 year

Constraints/Launch Date/Challenges

Assets Given

High fidelity screens for the homepage, dashboard, account settings, and onboarding were already designed before I joined the project. As well as 3 courses were already written.

Launch Date

Internal Launch: September 1st, 2021

Public Launch: January 25th, 2022

Challenges

Shortly after our internal launch,  we had a developer leave the team, bringing us down to just 1 developer.

High Fidelity Screens

These are the high fidelity screens that we designed & developed for our internal launch. I worked very closely with 2 other UX designers, as we took ownership over specific screens.

Beta Test

Internal Launch

After our internal launch, me and another UX designer conducted beta test with internal employees in order to get feedback and insight on how the site was performing. The goal of this beta test was to gain clarity around the changes we needed to make before our public launch. Specifically, around course digestibility, account creation, and account retention.

Insights

After we finished the interviews, we created an affinity map with the insights that we received. These were the most common themes:

INTERACTIVITY

80% of users wanted interactive content (videos, quizzes, and/or checklists)

60% of users wanted a summary take away at the end of each lesson

40% of users wanted a reward for finishing course

NAVIGATION

60% of users expected to see a course directory

60% looked for a way to search for courses

20% of users were looking for an option to listen to the course for accessibility

ONBOARDING

60% of users wanted a way to sign in with their social media accounts

Prioritization

After our beta testing, we had trouble deciding what features to move forward with due to the lack of time and development support that we had.

We decided to create a prioritization spreadsheet of features that considered the following:

Will this increase account creation?
Will this allow people to find topics that matter to them the most?
Does this allow for the content to be more easily digestible?
How much of a development lift will it be?

We then took our prioritization spreadsheet and had development work on the items with a green filled box & checkmark. We decided to hold off on the items with the yellow filled box, as these are features that we can slowly roll out after launch. The features with the blue filled box, we felt were important, but can be held off until we figure out the best course of action for them.

New High Fidelity Designs

Based on our prioritization spreadsheet, we designed & built 1 new screen and 2 new features.

Directory - Designed by another UX/UI designer on my team

This solution should allow for a seamless course discovery experience that is both simple + scalable and has a robust search functionality.

Search Feature - Designed by another UX/UI designer on my team

This solution should deliver an efficient search tool to allow different user types to find the answers they are looking for or the content they want to browse.

Downloadable PDFs - Designed by me

This solution will allow users to download checklists and other pdfs that they can take with them outside of the course. This should allow users to have interactivity within the course and actionable takeaways outside of the course.
